2001 Dodge Super8 Hemi Concept

2001 Super8 Hemi Concept

Concept cars don’t have to obey boundaries or follow anyone’s rules—that’s the fun of them. Often, their job is only to provoke thought and stimulate interest in new ideas.

Take the Dodge Super8 Hemi, for instance. Introduced at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show, the concept was nothing less than an effort to redefine the traditional American family sedan. And naturally, not everyone knew quite what to make of the outside-the-box design. Wrote one journalist, “This Dodge concept manages to be retro, futuristic and just plain bizarre all at once.”

Well played, Super8. Mission accomplished.

The Super8’s name was a cute play on words, inspired by the old home movie camera format and by the engine under the hood: an experimental 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 353 hp. The production version of this powerplant wouldn’t appear in showrooms for another two years. Equipped with a prototype four-speed automatic transmission with retro push-button controls, the Super8 could do 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 154 mph.

The Super8’s styling was equally daring and experimental, with a ‘50s-style wraparound windshield and reverse-sweep A-pillars. The familiar Dodge crosshair grille is evident, but this was the biggest, boldest example ever seen on a passenger car, taking up much of the front elevation. The interior featured the latest in telematics and mobile entertainment for 2001, but rendered in a retro-futuristic turbine theme in brushed aluminum and fine top-grain leather.

As we know, the Super8 never went into production. However, its V8 rear-drive layout did contribute key elements to the platform that became today’s Dodge Charger. The Super8 also achieved another kind of automotive immortality: In 2005, a stylized, miniature version was produced as a Mattel Hot Wheels toy. Among car designers, that’s regarded as a supreme honor.

Industry Leader: The 3.6-Liter Pentastar V6

3.6-Liter Pentastar V-6

Red Ram, Ramcharger, MagnumV8—great engines are simply part of the Dodge tradition. The legacy of engineering leadership continues with the Pentastar® V6.

One of the most versatile engines on the market today, the Pentastar V6 is offered in the Dodge Avenger, Journey, Charger, Challenger, Grand Caravan, and Durango. Whether the job is towing a boat to the lake or wringing the last drop from a gallon of gasoline in the daily commute, the Pentastar can do it all. When the Pentastar went into production, it replaced seven former engines in the Chrysler corporate lineup.

One key to the Pentastar’s go-anywhere, do-anything capability is its wide, flat torque curve, which allows the V6 to drive and perform like a big V8 while still delivering exceptional fuel economy. A host of advanced features including VVT (Variable Valve Timing) improve volumetric and combustion efficiency across the engine’s entire operating range, allowing the Pentastar’s torque output to exceed 90 percent of its peak value from 1,600 to 6,400 rpm.

Not that many years ago, this level of efficiency wasn’t even considered possible in internal combustion engines, but the Pentastar delivered. The engine broke additional new ground by offering the cutting-edge technology across the market, in practical people movers like the Journey to sporty GTs like the Challenger.

For example, the standard Pentastar V6 in the Dodge Charger is rated at 300 horsepower and still delivers up to an EPA estimated 31 miles per gallon on the highway. Imagine it: V8-flavored performance in a roomy sedan with great fuel economy, too. It’s the best of all worlds. It’s no wonder that since the engine’s announcement in 2009, the Pentastar V6 has been honored with nearly every industry award—and continues to win them today.

Introducing the Challenger R/T Redline

Challenger R/T Redline

For the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, Dodge has unveiled a very special edition of the Challenger R/T: the Redline. “Building on Challenger’s all-time sales record in 2012, the new Challenger R/T Redline fuses our iconic heritage with a one-of-a-kind customized appearance,” says Reid Bigland, Dodge Brand president and CEO.

The R/T Redline’s name is echoed in the two-tone Redline Red and Graphite stripe that stretches from the front wheel arch to the tail, tracing the Challenger’s signature character line. On the rear quarters, the graphic incorporates Redline block lettering in the same red/graphite color scheme. Topping off the stunning body treatment, there’s a special body-color grille surround up front.

Further complementing the Redline theme, the 20-inch Black Chrome wheels have a matching red backbone and lip. Buyers can optimize the Redline’s wheel/tire package with the available Super Track Pak, which includes Goodyear Eagle F1 P245/45R20 three-season performance tires, lowered ride height, and high-performance brake linings.

Like all Challenger R/T models, the Redline comes standard with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with cold-air induction package. Both manual and automatic transmissions are offered: With the Tremec six-speed manual, the HEMI is rated at 375 hp; with the five-speed automatic incorporating paddle shifter and performance shift calibration, the rating is a nearly identical 372 hp.

With either gearbox, the Redline is equipped with a performance-tuned dual-exhaust system with low-restriction under-floor mufflers and bottle resonators. The special exhaust setup allows 0-60 mph times in the low five-second range and gives the Redline an aggressive growl like no other Challenger.

“The new R/T Redline combines unmatched personalization with the unmistakable performance of the legendary HEMI V-8,” says Bigland. Available either R/T or R/T Plus trim levels and in four signature colors—Bright White, Pitch Black, Billet Silver, and Granite Crystal—the Dodge Challenger R/T Redline hits the showrooms in April.
