Drag racing champion Allen Johnson ran the table in Las Vegas this past weekend with his Dodge Avenger, scoring big wins in both the K&N Pro Stock Challenge on Saturday and the Pro Stock Eliminator feature on Sunday.
One of eight elite racers to win an invitation to the K&N Pro Stock Challenge, Johnson came to Las Vegas as the number one seed. The veteran Dodge racer drove around Greg Anderson and his Dodge teammate Jeg Coughlin in the early rounds, knocking out two major contenders. He then collected his second career Challenge victory by turning back Erica Enders-Stevens in the final round, winning $50,000 for his trouble.
In the main event on Sunday at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, Johnson then cruised his Dodge Avenger to his second straight national event win of the season, defeating Enders-Stevens a second time with a final round performance of 6.713 seconds at 206.76 mph. With the $50,000 on Saturday, $25,000 for the feature on Sunday, and another $25,000 bonus for sweeping both events, Johnson claimed $100,000 in winnings for the weekend.
“It seems like our car really likes altitude tracks, and hats off to my guys for pulling off the sweep today,” Johnson said. At 2,100 feet above sea level, Johnson noted, The Strip at Las Vegas presents a special challenge to engine tuners. “It’s awesome to win both races. It takes a lot of money to run these cars so anytime you can infuse a little extra money into the budget, it is a good thing.”
At Las Vegas, Johnson also debuted a new sponsor and paint scheme. For the rest of the 2013 season and beyond, his Dodge Avenger will wear the colors of Mopar Express Lane Fast Oil Changes & More.
